The concentrator takes in the atmospheric air passed through the compressor; the compressor compresses the air and transfers this compressed air to the surge tank via a heat exchanger. Here heat exchangers lessen the temperature of compressed air to enhance the adsorption process. 

The compressed air is moved to the molecular sieve beds through the surge tank, where the adsorption process occurs. In the molecular sieve bed there present a material known as zeolite responsible for removing nitrogen from the air.

In oxygen concentrators, two sieve beds are positioned. When the air is passed through the compressor, it is forced into the first sieve bed. Here the pressure of air in the first cylinder increases 2.5 times than the normal atmospheric pressure. 

The nitrogen is removed from the compressed air in the first sieve bed, and pure oxygen is transferred to the oxygen tank. It completes the first half cycle of an oxygen concentrator. Here at this time, the first sieve bed gets filled with nitrogen molecules.

The four-way solenoid wall changed the gas flow in a second-half cycle and transferred the compressed air into the second molecular sieve bed. Here the same process takes place as of the first sieve bed.

When compressed air is passed through the second sieve bed, the pressure inside the first sieve bed becomes normal, making zeolite release nitrogen molecules in the external environment. As it releases nitrogen, the first sieve bed is again ready for the adsorption process. Here one cycle is completed, and now both the sieve beds are prepared for the second cycle. 

After the half-cycle, oxygen is moved to the oxygen product tank. With the help of a flow metre adjusting valve (adjust the oxygen flow as per patient requirement), pure oxygen is passed through the humidifier bottle, where dry oxygen gets moisturized. Finally, a patient can inhale this oxygen-enriched gas stream via a nasal cannula.
